What it is and who can ask
Plataforma ONE says that the FNMT certificate is an electronic certification issued by the National Mint and Stamp Factory, the Royal Spanish Mint (FNMT-RCM), which links users to signature verification data and confirms their identity. It adds that any Spanish citizen or foreign national, of legal age or an emancipated minor, who has a valid ID card (DNI) or foreigner identification number (NIE) can apply. It also says that processing times vary depending on the type of certificate requested, ranging from a few hours to several days, or even weeks if in-person identity verification is required.
Documents for the citizen certificate
- For the citizen electronic certificate, foreign nationals need the request code sent to their email, and a foreigner identification card showing the NIE together with the passport, or the official document granting the NIF or NIE together with the passport.
- For the citizen electronic certificate, European Union citizens need the request code sent to their email, and a document showing the NIE together with a passport or identity document from the country of origin.
- Documentation provided from a foreign entity must be submitted with the Hague Apostille or in accordance with the requirements of the corresponding country, in Spanish or officially translated into Spanish by a sworn translation.
Steps and price
Plataforma ONE lists four steps and says that before starting, you must check that your device has the software required for key generation installed, called FNMT-RCM CONFIGURATOR.
It adds that the price ranges from €0 to €24, taxes not included, and the certificate is issued with a validity period of 2 years.
It also says that the citizen electronic certificate can be requested with video identification, in-person accreditation at an office, DNIe or a mobile device.
The same page says that when downloading the certificate for a sole or joint administrator or a legal entity, you must use the same computer and user account with which you made the application.
It adds that if you are applying for the User Certificate as an individual, the applicant or their representative must personally visit a registration office to verify identity, and when the applicant cannot attend, a third party may go on their behalf after the signature has been notarized.
You need a NIE first if you are not Spanish. See the NIE guide. For a lighter login that needs no software, see Cl@ve.
